Hey everyone! Welcome back to one more cooking video. This time, my friend Maiara is going to show us how to prepare a delicious Brazilian Feijoada. One of the most famous and representative Brazilian dishes.

Some history

Brazilian Feijoada was created some centuries ago when the slavery in Brazil was still a thing. There are many theories about how this dish history, but one of the most popular ones is that the slaves used the leftovers of the cows and pigs that the Portuguese colonizers didn’t want to eat (as ears, tails, and tongue) to prepare a dish including beans and rice. And supposedly, nobility didn’t accept it; Feijoada was only meant to be eaten by the poor people.

After the pass of many centuries and abolishing slavery officially (I know it’s still is a thing, and there’s much work needed) Brazilian Feijoada recipe has evolved, and people added other kinds of meat like ribs, pork loin, and sausages.

How to eat Feijoada?

Today, if you come to Brazil, you’ll find that Feijoada is a dish for everyone. No matter to which social class you belong. People consider this a delicious meal. It is. The only drawback you’ll have to pay is that you’ll have to take a good nap afterward because if you go to a Boteco, portions served there are gigantic, or at least bring a friend so that you can share.

As I mentioned above, Botecos serve great Feijoada. When you come to Brazil, be sure to double check which days are the right ones to order one. In São Paulo, it’s usually Thursdays and Saturdays. Then, when you are there, the first thing they will ask you is if you want to get a caipirinha. Unless you don’t drink alcohol, I recommend you to answer; YES. If not, any fresh fruit juice would do the trick.

In your plate you’re going to find farofa; toasted tapioca flour fried with carrots and onions (the carrot is optional). Some greens, usually Couve which is a variety of kale. Some people would add tomato and onion sauce called Vinagrete.
